I have already talked to you about insulin resistance and how it can lead to further weight gain, but some research has shown that it may cause muscle wasting also. This is not good for those following healthy eating guidelines.
That means it is harder for you to lose weight and get healthy even if you are lifting weights.
The reason for this is because your body increases it’s use of myostatin which causes muscle wasting and prevents muscle growth.
This doesn’t help improve your insulin resistance that’s for sure. Once you become overweight you already have developed some form of insulin resistance. Whether you are on a healthy weight loss diet or other healthy diet plans the insulin resistance is going to cause a problem.
Here is the researcher discussing what happens when your body increases myostatin.
Hittel believes this may be due to a pre-diabetic condition known as insulin resistance that "tricks" the muscles into thinking the body is starving despite the fact that blood sugar levels are skyrocketing.
"When that happens, the body reverses muscle production using myostatin," says Hittel. "This is particularly worrisome because losing muscle mass further erodes your ability to control your blood sugar with exercise."
Researchers say one of the signs of the transition between insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes is a loss of muscle mass.
So what can you do about this?
You can control your blood sugar and insulin levels so that you minimize the insulin resistance. Remember if you are overweight you are already somewhat insulin resistant and it becomes more challenging for you to lose weight.
Control your blood sugars and insulin levels by following the proper healthy eating guidelines so that you keep your blood sugar and insulin levels low and your glucagon hormone high. This helps promote fat burning instead of fat storage.
