A new study out of Tufts university shows that those who eliminate or attempt to eliminate carbohydrates from their diet may actually cause memory loss.
Participants performed significantly worse on memory tests than participants who didn’t follow a low/no carbohydrate diet after only one week of a weight loss diet that serverely restricted carbohydrates.
Dieters who eliminate carbohydrates from their diet may lose some extra pounds, but it could leave them fuzzy headed and forgetful, says a new study. Their study on women aged 22 to 55 showed that those on a low carbohydrate meals suffered impaired memory function after just one week.
Psychology professor Holly Taylor, of Tufts University, Massachusetts, said that when carbohydrates were re-introduced the women’s mental function returned to normal.
“The connection between the foods we eat and how we think doesn’t really enter into most people’s minds,” said study co-author and cognitive psychologist Taylor, as saying. She added: “This study demonstrates that the food you eat can have an immediate impact on cognitive behaviour. The popular low-carb, no-carb diets have the strongest potential for negative impact on thinking and cognition.”
So the conclusion is that trying to eliminate carbohydrates all together is maybe effective for weight loss, but bad if you want to remember when you should eat next or what you ate for your last meal.
Not to mention your metabolism can be negatively affected by this method of dieting.
Instead if you cycle your carbohydrates your body will become less dependent on the amount of carbohydrates you eat and you will lose weight.
What won’t happen is memory loss or any metabolism malfunction to derail your weight loss goals.
Moral of this study is to control your caloric intake through carb cycling and not a long term no carb diet or severe low carb diet.
