More Healthy Meals of Fish

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

Fish is a good option for healthy meals, but depending on which kind you like the best, you may have to eat it more often to get good nutrition.

The differences in how to eat healthy amounts of fish come from the distinction between cold-water and warm-water fish.  Salmon, herring, mackerel, and sardines are cold-water fish.  They are filled with the beneficial fatty acids EPA and DHA.  The downside is that a lot of people would rather not eat these fish.

They prefer others that tend to be warm-water, like orange roughy and cod.  The problem, in terms of eating right, is that these fish are less fatty than their cold-water counterparts.  The level of EPA and DHA is just not comparable.

To be clear, it is possible to use warm-water fish as a source of EPA and DHA in healthy diets.  (more…)

B12: Good Nutrition for Everyone

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Vitamin B12 is a group of molecules, called cobalamins, that all contain cobalt, which is a rare element.  If you haven’t been paying attention to your intake of vitamin B12 through healthy eating plans, you will want to start after you learn a little more about its good nutrition.

The presence of B12 in your body helps with processes that you  might take for granted.  Just think about what changes would occur if the following things were impeded by a vitamin deficiency: normal development and function of the brain and nervous system, DNA synthesis and regulation, fatty acid metabolism, and creation of energy from fatty foods.

In addition to those important processes being thrown out of whack, a lack of B12 may cause depression, fatigue, poor memory, and skin damage.  These are related to the vitamin’s roles in red blood cell production and anemia prevention.  How can a person who is tired and depressed and has a hard time remembering if they are eating right devote their energy to following a healthy weight loss plan?

That unfortunate situation is one reason to pay attention to the amount of vitamin B12 that is included in your healthy meals.  Another reason is because your exercise sessions use up the B12 in your body and may lead to deficiency symptoms.  When you exercise, your metabolism increases, blood cells and muscle tissues are damaged and need to be repaired, and oxygen needs to travel more throughout the blood.  B12 is used to accomplish all these things that make exercise beneficial, so it is crucial that you always have enough to get the jobs done.

Knowing how to eat healthy for adequate B12 levels and actually eating right are two different things.  (more…)
