In the food business, companies save money by buying the cheapest products and make money by getting all of their products out there in the cheapest way possible.  So distributors and buyers constantly make deals with each other and don’t always keep the health of the consumer in mind.

The consumer, who shops at a grocery store or eats at a restaurant, loses out on the deal because their food is unhealthy and potentially dangerous, all because the people who handle the food wanted to make money.

We already know that there are a lot of factors in our society that work against healthy eating plans.  And now we find out that even if we know how to eat healthy and make good choices at the grocery store or while eating out, the food might not be as safe as we thought.

Do You Need a Good Reason to Start Eating Right?

A good case for building healthy diets comes from some bad health statistics.  It is being reported that strokes are occurring more frequently in younger people than they used to.  This means that older adults are not the only people at risk for strokes anymore.

The rate change has happened in a very short time: 10 years.  And the conditions that are present in a lot of people who have strokes are familiar issues that we talk about often: obesity and diabetes.

Basically what this report is saying is that in the absence of healthy eating, strokes have become a concern for a wider range of people.  So healthy diets could help turn this statistic around.  (more…)

Following the new healthy plate guidelines for protein could easily get you into trouble with fad diets.  For example, eating a processed, high-sodium, low-fat hot dog for lunch every day is not eating right.  Even if you skip the bun, this is not a good protein choice.

Healthy eating guidelines should be more specific about the choices that should be made for this part of your plate.  Choose unprocessed foods.  Cook at home instead of eating out.  Make your own healthy meals instead of throwing a plastic container into the microwave.

You can still feel free to be flexible with how to eat healthy protein.  For instance, vegetarians can use beans or hummus to fill this portion of their plate.  Just think about your choices.

There are many different tools you can use to get on the track of eating right.  We are looking at the healthy plate method recommended by the USDA.

These healthy eating guidelines encourage having fruits and vegetables at every meal.  This sounds like a good plan in theory, but when it is actually applied it might introduce too much sugar into the diet.  You usually don’t have to worry about the sugar in fruit, because if you’re eating it in moderation, then the good nutrition is worth it.  The concern is that, in an attempt to follow these new guidelines and eat fruit for every meal, a person might overload.

The newest method of how to eat healthy meals according to the USDA is not by building a pyramid out of good nutrition anymore.  It’s by filling your dinner plate (or lunch or breakfast plates) with the right proportions of food groups.

It advises people to fill a plate with almost equal portions of vegetables, fruits, grains, and some kind of protein, plus a small side of some kind of dairy.  This composition is recommended for every meal.

Healthy Diets That Fight Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a sneaky condition that develops if you’re not eating right.  Even if fad diets help you lose weight, you still might be in danger of things like high triglycerides or insulin resistance.

One important caution about metabolic syndrome is that it has nothing to do with body weight.  Muscle mass and fat mass both contribute to your weight on the scale, so it is more beneficial to be aware of your body composition.  A person who has little lean muscle, more fat mass, and excess fat around the middle of their body is typically at risk of having insulin resistance and developing metabolic syndrome.

Of course, the opposite person, who has more lean muscle and less fat, is in a safer state.  This person probably follows guidelines of healthy diets that include eating right and exercising.

Keep Eating Right After Achieving Healthy Weight Loss

You’ve been following the rules of healthy diets and exercising consistently.  You finally reached your healthy weight loss goals, and you feel good about yourself.  So, it’s okay to increase your portions in healthy meals every once in awhile and choose the higher-fat options sometimes, as long as you stay fit, right?

Wrong.

While it might seem okay to add a little extra to your healthy eating plans, since you’re still taking in plenty of good nutrition and working off the extra, the truth is that you could be setting yourself up for an unhealthy future.

A lean body and healthy eating habits are not true indicators of how to eat healthy.  It’s still possible to consume more calories than your body can use even if you don’t see the physical effects.
